Landing at Santiago International Airport (SCL)
Santiago is the only gateway to Portillo and it is 150 km away, about 2 hr 30 by road. Nearly every European service arrives early in the morning, which is convenient: you reach the hotel in time for lunch and an afternoon on the hill. A private car is £150, an MPV £307 and an 8-seat minibus £683.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person, not a chatbot
Tip: most arrivals here are overnight flights, so build the queue at immigration into your morning rather than assuming you will be out in twenty minutes. The free waiting window exists for exactly this.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Why the cheapest row is the right row here
Santiago returns thirteen vehicles to Portillo, and they do not climb in a steady line. They arrive in flat shelves with gaps between them.
- 3-seat private car: £150
- 4-seat MPV: £307 · 5-seat MPV: £307 · a second 3-seat car: £308
- 5-seat executive MPV: £574 · executive car: £575
- Minibuses: £683 for eight, up to £840 for fourteen
For a party of three or fewer that settles it. There is nothing between £150 and £307, so the private car is not a compromise, it is simply the row that fits. On most routes the advice is to look one rung up before booking. Here the rung above is twice the money.
What to do about it: decide the number of seats you genuinely need, take the cheapest vehicle that holds them, and check whether the same vehicle appears again lower down the list.
Two things the list will not tell you
- The same 3-seat private car appears twice, at £150 and at £308, because two local operators bid the same journey. Neither is an error; the list simply does not sort them together
- The four-seat and five-seat MPVs are the same price, £307 each. Booking the smaller one buys you nothing
Both come from the same thing: independent operators setting their own rates for the vehicles they run, shown together in one list. Every fare will be honoured at the price displayed. It means the results reward reading rather than filtering, which is the opposite of what a seat-number box trains you to do.
What the drive is actually like
Three parts, and only the last is a mountain road. Out of Santiago you run north on the motorway, then turn east into the Aconcagua valley and follow it through Los Andes, which the live page puts 60 km short of the resort and about an hour and a half away. That is the last proper town: shops, pharmacy, cash machines.
After that the road climbs, and the live page hands you the measure of it without meaning to. It lists the Cristo Redentor monument on the Argentine border at 15 km from the hotel and an hour and a half away. Fifteen kilometres, ninety minutes. That is a stack of hairpins on an international freight route, and it is why this page argues for a driver who does it daily.
Winter conditions
The live page warns that winter weather on this road may call for chains or four-wheel drive. With a booked transfer that is the operator's obligation rather than yours: vetted local firms run the climb all season, equipped for it, and you arrive with nothing to hire, fit or check. Heavy snow can close the pass, and a local driver is the person most likely to know before you do.
What to have ready before you land
- Your hotel booking reference, because Portillo is a single property and that is the whole address
- A phone number that works in Chile, so the driver can reach you rather than circling
- Warm layers in your hand luggage, since you are going from a city at sea level to a mountain pass in one journey
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
- Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above, all for a full refund
- Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking
- Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces
- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver and no cash to find at the end of a long day. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Altitude, and why it belongs on this page
You will go from a long-haul cabin at sea level to a hotel on a high mountain pass inside one morning, and the lifts climb higher again. Drink more water than feels necessary on the drive, go easy on the first evening, and treat day one on the hill as a half day. A night in Santiago first is a reasonable plan if your flights allow it.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
