Landing at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)
Malpensa is the cheapest gateway to St. Moritz on every vehicle this page prices: 175 km, about 3 to 4 hours by road, and £408 for a private car. It is a two-terminal airport, so check which one your airline uses before you book, and note that the free inter-terminal shuttle bus runs between T1 and T2 if you land in the wrong one.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person rather than a chatbot
Tip: this transfer crosses from Italy into Switzerland, so keep passports and any residence documents where you can reach them rather than in the ski bag in the boot.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Landing somewhere else instead
Four airports serve St. Moritz and they are not interchangeable. Book the transfer for the airport you are actually landing at:
- Milan Malpensa (MXP) — 175 km, about 3 to 4 hr, from £408. Cheapest on every vehicle, 8-seater £566, coaches to 36 seats.
- Zurich (ZRH) — about 3 to 3.5 hr, from £580. The shortest drive and the widest flight choice; 8-seater £812.
- Innsbruck (INN) — 190 km, about 3 hr, from £511. Cheaper than Zurich up to 8 seats at £703, and nothing above 14.
- Geneva (GVA) — 480 km, about 5 to 6 hr, from £1,404. The longest drive and the dearest at every size.
North out of Lombardy, then up
From Malpensa the route runs north through Lombardy and up the lakes before turning into the mountains for the last stretch into the Engadin, the high valley St. Moritz sits at the top of. The motorway part is easy. The final climb is the part that earns the local operator.
From Zurich and Innsbruck the approach comes in from the north instead, and from Geneva it is the length of Switzerland: 480 km, five to six hours, which is further than the run to Zermatt.
Worth knowing: the airport you fly into changes this bill more than the vehicle you choose does. One private car is £408 from Malpensa, £511 from Innsbruck, £580 from Zurich and £1,404 from Geneva. Settle that before anyone books a seat.
Where you are dropped
St. Moritz is not one address. It comes in two parts and the valley runs on past both of them:
- St. Moritz Dorf — the upper town on the hillside, where most of the hotels are
- St. Moritz Bad — down by the lake, flatter and usually cheaper
- The valley floor — Samedan and the villages either side, minutes away and often better value again
Give the property name and street when you book and your driver goes to the door rather than to the middle of town.
Winter on the approach
The lowland roads are ordinary winter driving. The last hour is not: every route in gains a lot of height, and that stretch takes weather while the valley below stays clear. It is exactly why the operators on this route are local and winter-equipped, and why that final hour is the one you want a professional driving.
Your first day on the hill
St. Moritz skis across separate mountains rather than one linked bowl, so your first morning involves a choice rather than a default. The Engadin is high, dry and unusually sunny, and the season runs from late November to early April.
Getting to the lifts from your hotel
- On foot or by local bus — Dorf and Bad both sit within reach of a lift station, and the valley has a proper local network
- Your transfer — hoppa drops you at your accommodation, so the daily run to the lifts is a separate arrangement
- The valley railway — the line that brought you in from Chur also links the villages along the floor, which is worth knowing if you are staying outside town
Tip: check which mountain is running before you commit to a lift pass for the day. Separate areas mean one can be on wind hold while another is in sunshine, and that is an advantage only if you find out before you set off.
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Malpensa has you in the Engadin by mid-afternoon. An evening flight means a night arrival and a full first day instead. Transfers run through the night on this route; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
If the hill is shut
The valley answers this well. The railway is a day out in its own right, Livigno is about 1.5 hours over the border for duty-free shopping, and the lake and the villages along the floor make an ordinary alpine day rather than a write-off.
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
- Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above, all for a full refund
- Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking, and ask for a second in the same booking if you need one
- Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces
- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver and no cash to find at the end of a long day. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Crossing a border with the transfer
Three of the four gateways are in a different country from the resort. Carry passports and any travel documents in the cabin bag rather than the ski bag, and expect the driver to take the standard route rather than a shortcut. Nothing about the crossing changes the fare you agreed.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud when you land in a country whose roaming rules you have not checked.
