Landing at Denver International Airport (DEN)
Denver takes nearly every transatlantic arrival and it is 120 miles from Vail, or 193 km. Plan on two and a half hours and expect closer to two when the road is clear. A private car is £368, a five-seat MPV £373 and a 14-seat minibus £586.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person, not a chatbot
Tip: Denver is a very large airport and the gate-to-kerb walk is long with ski bags. The free waiting window is generous for exactly this reason, so do not rush the oversized baggage belt.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Five pounds, and why it settles the booking
Denver returns eighteen vehicles to Vail. The interesting part is not the top of the list but the bottom of it, where three rungs sit almost on top of each other.
- 3-seat private car: £368
- 4-seat MPV: £370
- 5-seat MPV: £373
Five pounds separates the smallest vehicle from the largest of the three. On a ski trip, where a board bag counts as two pieces of luggage and a boot bag has to go somewhere, that is not a decision. The MPV wins even for a couple travelling alone.
What to do about it: filter for the vehicle you think you need, then look one or two rows either side before you book. On this route the row above is usually a few pounds and always more room.
Two other things the list will not tell you
- The same 3-seat private car appears twice, at £368 and at £480, with two local operators bidding the same journey. Neither is an error; the list simply does not sort them together
- The 14-seat minibus is £586 and the 8-seat minibus is £1,680. A group of eight that books by party size pays for it
Both are the same phenomenon: independent operators setting their own rates for the vehicles they run, all shown in one list. Every fare will be honoured at the price displayed. It means the results reward reading rather than filtering, which is the opposite of what a seat-number box trains you to do.
Eagle County, and why it is worth pricing here
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is 35 miles from the village and about forty minutes by road. It exists largely to serve this valley, and in winter it takes direct services from Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
A private car from it is £457 against £368 from Denver. That is roughly a quarter more for under a third of the distance and a third of the time, which is a much narrower premium than the near airport usually carries in Colorado.
For a group, the gap goes the other way
Eagle County's minibuses run in proper order: £806 for eight seats, £874 for ten, £921 for eleven and £1,008 for fourteen. Denver's 8-seater is £1,680. If your party is eight and you want a list you can trust, this is the airport that behaves.
The coach and the train
Bustang runs from Denver to Vail in around two and a half to three hours and is genuinely cheap, but it leaves from the city rather than the terminal, so the airport leg is yours to add. The train is the odd one: Amtrak's nearest stop is Glenwood Springs, sixty miles the far side of the resort, and the live timetable puts the combined journey at about five hours.
What to have ready before you land
- The property address as it appears on your accommodation booking, not just the resort name, since Vail Village, Lionshead and East Vail are separate drop-offs
- The property name written down, so the driver and anyone meeting you are talking about the same building
- A phone number that works in the US, so the driver can reach you rather than circling
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers

- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it

Winter driving on this route
I-70 climbs to the Eisenhower Tunnel under the Continental Divide and then crosses Vail Pass at over 10,000 feet, and heavy snow slows or closes either. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and drives that road daily through the season, which is the difference between a delay and a lost evening. The Eagle County approach from the west avoids both climbs, which is part of what you are buying with the shorter transfer.
Altitude, and why it belongs on this page
Vail Village sits at 8,000 feet and the lifts go 3,000 higher, and you will reach it from a transatlantic cabin inside a single day. Drink more water than feels necessary on the drive, go easy on the first evening, and treat day one on the hill as a half day.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
