Landing at Oslo Airport (OSL)
Gardermoen is the gateway to Trysil for practically everybody, and the reason is not sentiment. It is the one airport hoppa prices a full range of vehicles from on this route: a private car at £500, a minibus at £1,150, a coach at £2,068. The drive is 160 km and about 2.5 hours.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a board with your surname on it. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person rather than a chatbot
Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket before you leave the terminal. This is a long inland drive and you do not want to be looking for it on a phone with one bar.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
If you are looking at another airport
Two others come up in flight searches for this resort, and neither is a straight swap:
- Torp Sandefjord (TRF) — a real route, priced at £3,036 for a private car against Oslo's £500, and capped at a 5-seat MPV at £3,946.
- Scandinavian Mountains Airport — built at Sälen to serve these slopes, and an airport hoppa runs no transfer from. Fly there only if your ground transport is arranged for you.
North-east, into the Østerdalen
From Gardermoen the route runs inland and north-east, away from the fjord and into forest and river country, covering 160 km in about 2.5 hours. It is a long, quiet, well-surfaced drive rather than a mountain road with hairpins, and that is worth knowing if you have been told to expect an Alpine ascent at the end.
What it is not is fast in bad weather. The resort's own guidance puts the journey at up to 3 hours when road conditions are poor, and your fare covers the drive however long it takes.
Worth knowing: the 160 km quoted here is the resort's own figure, stated in its route notes and again in its FAQ. You will find shorter numbers elsewhere, because some are measured in a straight line rather than along the road you will actually drive. Plan against 160 km.
Where you are dropped
At the address you gave. Trysil spreads out beneath the hill, so "Trysil" typed on its own is a district and not a doorstep:
- Trysil Turistsenter — the recognised resort centre, and the stop the scheduled coach from Oslo uses
- A hotel or apartment in the centre — give the property name and your driver goes to it
- A cabin on the hill — give the cabin name or number; the last kilometre of these can be a small road
What a car buys you afterwards
Nothing on the first day, and quite a lot later in the week. Sälen is about an hour across the Swedish border at 76 km, Elverum is 63 km, Rena 80 km and Lillehammer 150 km. If none of that appeals, a transfer in and a transfer out is the simpler arrangement.
Your first day on the hill
Trysil is the largest ski resort in Norway and it skis like a family mountain: wide groomers, a proper spread of blues, black runs for people who want them, and off-piste beyond that. A mixed group can spend the week on one hill without splitting up.
Getting to the lifts
- On foot — from a central apartment or hotel, which is why most people book to the resort centre
- Local ski bus — a third-party resort service links the accommodation areas to the lift bases
- Your transfer — hoppa takes you to the door you named, so the daily run to the lifts is a separate arrangement
Tip: if you are booking a cabin rather than a central apartment, check how it connects to the lifts before you book the transfer. The drop-off is the easy part; the week of getting to the slope is the part people underestimate.
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Oslo has you in Trysil by mid-afternoon with the evening to sort skis. An evening flight means arriving late, and transfers run through the night on this route. A nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
When you are not skiing
Trysil has an unusual amount of it: snowshoeing, dog sledding, horse riding and a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest, a kids' club, and an après scene that runs from bars through to a late-night disco. Five to seven days is the length most people find right here.
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
- Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above, all for a full refund
- Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking
- Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces
- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver at the end of a long drive and no cash to find in a country where you may not be carrying any. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Winter driving on this route
This is ordinary Norwegian winter driving on a road that is cleared and used every day, but it is 160 km of it and the light goes early in the season. Vetted local operators run winter-equipped vehicles as a matter of course here. If you hire a car instead, check what is fitted before you leave the airport rather than after you have joined the road.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud when you land.
