Landing at Åre Östersund Airport (OSD)
Åre Östersund is the gateway to Vemdalen for anyone travelling in a group of five or fewer: 130 km, about two hours by road, and £612 for a private car. It is a small airport, so there is no terminal to change and no transit to catch. You walk from the gate into arrivals.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person rather than a chatbot
Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket before you leave the terminal. The road south runs through a long stretch of forest with little beside it.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Landing somewhere else instead
Three airports serve Vemdalen and they are not interchangeable. Book the transfer for the airport you are actually landing at:
- Åre Östersund (OSD) — 130 km, about 2 hours, from £612. Closest bookable gateway, and capped at 5 seats before the price jumps.
- Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) — 450 km, about 5 to 5.5 hours, from £813. The group gateway: 6-seat minibus £1,101, 8-seat £1,214, 16-seat £3,351.
- Sveg (EVG) — 63 km, about 1 hour. The nearest airport of the three, and hoppa prices no vehicle from it. Arrange that hour separately.
South from Östersund, or north from Stockholm
From Åre Östersund the route runs 130 km south into Härjedalen, roughly two hours of well-kept two-lane road through forest and open fell. It is a quiet drive with long gaps between towns, and that is the whole character of it.
From Arlanda the approach is the mirror image and far longer: 450 km north, five to five and a half hours, driven straight through in one vehicle rather than broken by a connection.
Worth knowing: the page you may have read elsewhere calls Åre Östersund the closest airport. It is not. Sveg is 63 km out against Östersund's 130. What makes Östersund the right answer is not distance but inventory: it is the nearest airport hoppa can actually put a vehicle at.
Where you are dropped
Vemdalen is not a single village, and this is the part worth getting right at booking. Your accommodation will sit in one of three linked areas:
- Vemdalsskalet — the central of the three, and the name most lodges book under
- Björnrike — the family end, with gentler terrain off the lifts
- Klövsjö/Storhogna — the northern pair, nearest the road in from Östersund
Give the property name and the area when you book, and your driver goes to the door rather than to the nearest lift station.
Winter on this road
Swedish roads are well maintained and snowstorms still happen. Winter tyres are mandatory through the winter months, daylight is short in January, and the stretches between towns are genuinely empty. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and drives it through the season.
Your first day on the hill
Vemdalen skis as three linked areas with groomed pistes, plenty of easy terrain and cross-country trails running well beyond the lifts. It is Scandinavian skiing rather than Alpine: rounded, forested, generous with beginners, and considerably less crowded than the Alps in half term.
Getting to the lifts from your lodge
- On foot or by resort shuttle — most lodges sit within reach of one of the three areas, so the daily trip is short
- Your transfer — hoppa drops you at your accommodation, so moving between the linked areas during the week is a separate arrangement
- By hire car — worth it only if you plan to ski all three areas and explore Härjedalen between them
Tip: cross-country trails here run long and start close to the lodges. If half your party does not ski downhill, this is the resort where that stops being a problem.
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Åre Östersund has you at the lodge by mid-afternoon with the evening to sort gear. From Arlanda the same flight becomes an evening arrival, because five and a half hours of road is five and a half hours of road. Transfers run through the night; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
If the weather closes in
Snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice fishing are all on the doorstep, and the lodges here take traditional Swedish cooking seriously. A day off the pistes in Härjedalen is a day out rather than a day lost.

Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver at the end of a long day. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Winter driving in Härjedalen
Winter tyres are mandatory in Sweden through the winter months. The roads are well maintained, but snowstorms happen and ice is a normal condition rather than an event. If you hire a car, check what is fitted before you leave the airport and look at conditions before a long leg.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud when you land somewhere small at dusk.
