Landing at Zurich Airport (ZRH)
Zurich is the gateway to Andermatt for almost everyone: 110 km, about 1 hour 30 by road, and from £386 for a private SUV seating four. It is Switzerland's largest airport and the one with the widest flight choice, and it is also the only one of the three that returns vehicles above 14 seats.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person, not a chatbot
Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket to your phone before you leave the terminal.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Landing somewhere else instead
Three airports serve Andermatt and they are nothing like interchangeable. Book the transfer for the airport you are actually landing at:
- Zurich (ZRH) — 110 km, about 1 hr 30 min, from £386. Nearest, quickest and cheapest at every size.
- Basel (BSL) — 170 km, about 2 to 2.5 hr, from £632. Its 8-seat minibus is £1,341 and its largest vehicle is a 14-seat minibus at £2,332.
- Geneva (GVA) — 340 km, about 4 hr, from £1,025. An 8-seater is £1,598 and a 14-seater £2,019.
The prices do not run in the order you expect
On most routes the fares climb with the seats, so filtering the results by how many of you there are gets you close to the cheapest workable vehicle. On this one it does not, and the gap is big enough to be worth two minutes.
- The SUV seats 4 and lists at £386. The 2-seat private car lists at £424, and the 3-seat at £435.
- The 5-seat minibus is £447 and the 7-seat is £459. The 4-seat MPV is £472 and the 5-seat MPV is £495.
- The 18-seat coach lists at the same £870 band as the 14-seat minibus.
Worth knowing: a couple who books the SUV rather than the 2-seat car gets four seats and pays less. That is not a promotion or a trick of timing. It is how the inventory on this road is priced.
What still decides it
Bags, not seats. Every vehicle above carries roughly one ski or board bag per passenger, so a family of four with four board bags and four cases wants the seats of a five or a seven even though there are four of them. Declare the gear at booking and the operator sends something that holds it.
And if there are a lot of you
Zurich runs to a 16-seat minibus at £1,054, a 23-seat coach at £1,379 and a 36-seat coach at £1,620. Neither Basel nor Geneva returns a coach, and Basel stops at 14 seats altogether. A club trip books Zurich or it books two vehicles.
South from Zurich, then up
The drive runs south out of Zurich and into the mountains, 110 km in about an hour and a half. The last part is the mountain road rather than the motorway, and it is the stretch that takes weather while the lowlands stay merely wet. That is why the operators on this route are local and winter-equipped.
The railway runs beside it, and it is a real option
Andermatt has a station, which puts this resort in a small minority. From Zurich Hauptbahnhof a direct train runs to Göschenen, where you change for the last climb to Andermatt, about 2 hours 30 in total. From Basel SBB it is the same change at Göschenen, about 3 hours. From Geneva you travel to Brig and change there, around 5 hours.
Worth knowing: every rail route to Andermatt has a change in it. The trains are excellent and the ski bags still have to come off one and onto another. That single handover is most of what a transfer is buying you from Zurich, along with about an hour.
Buses
Buses run from Zurich to Andermatt, stopping at various points along the way. They are the cheapest way in and the slowest. Trains are generally quicker and more comfortable.
Where the driver drops you
At the door of the address you named. Andermatt is a village rather than a purpose-built resort, so give the property name as well as the street and the number, particularly for an apartment or a chalet on a lane.

Winter driving on this route
The motorway south from Zurich is ordinary winter driving. The mountain road at the end is not, and it can be a question in heavy snow when the lowlands are clear. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and knows the road. If you hire a car instead, check what is fitted before you leave the airport.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud.
