Landing at Denver International Airport (DEN)
Denver is the airport nearly every transatlantic arrival uses, and it is about four hours from Aspen. The drive runs west out of the city and over the Continental Divide, which is the part that weather affects. A private car is £959 and a 14-seat minibus £1,172.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person, not a chatbot
Tip: UK flights tend to land at Denver in the afternoon, which puts the mountain half of the drive in the dark and at altitude. Book the transfer rather than the hire car for day one. You can pick a car up in Aspen later in the week if you want one.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
What Eagle County saves you
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is 70 miles from Aspen, or 113 km, and the drive takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. A private car from it is £531 against £959 from Denver. That is a little over half the fare and roughly two and a half hours of road avoided.
Why it matters most to families: Denver sells three vehicles and none of them is an MPV. A party of four or five steps straight from a 3-seat car to a 7-seat SUV at £1,172. Out of Eagle County the same party picks a four-seat MPV at £756 or a five-seat at £774.
Where the saving disappears
Large groups gain far less. A 14-seat minibus is £1,172 from Denver and £1,189 from Eagle County, so the two airports very nearly agree at that size. If there are a dozen of you, fly where the flights are best and do not chase the connection.
Aspen's own airport
Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) is 6 miles from town and takes well under 15 minutes by road, but hoppa returns no vehicles on that leg and none is offered here. The RFTA bus runs between the airport and town regularly and covers it in about 15 minutes, which is the practical answer if your itinerary lands you there.
What to have ready before you land
- The property address as it appears on your accommodation booking, not just the resort name. Snowmass is a mile out and is its own village
- The property name written down, so the driver and anyone meeting you are talking about the same building
- A phone number that works in the US, so the driver can reach you rather than circling
Your first day on the hill
Four mountains share one pass here, and they are not interchangeable. Where you are staying and who you are skiing with decide which one you start on.
Picking the mountain
- Aspen Mountain rises straight out of town and has no beginner terrain. Steep, short and busy at the bottom
- Aspen Highlands holds the Highland Bowl, which is the reason a lot of people come, and it is a hike to the top of it
- Buttermilk is the family hill and the one to start on if anyone is learning
- Snowmass is the largest at over 5,700 acres and is a village in its own right, a mile from Aspen town
Tip: take the first day gently. Aspen sits high and the lifts go higher, and you will have arrived from sea level the day before. Altitude is the most common thing to spoil a first morning here, and it is the easiest to plan around.
Timing your arrival
A morning landing at Denver puts you in Aspen in the late afternoon with the light going. An afternoon landing means arriving after dark. Transfers run through the night on this route; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
If the weather closes in
Maroon Bells is 11 miles out, Basalt 20 and Carbondale 30. Glenwood Springs and its hot springs are 40 miles and about an hour, which is the standard bad-weather day. Vail is 100 miles and Breckenridge 135, both around two and a half hours, so they are day trips rather than afternoons.
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
- Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above, all for a full refund
- Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking
- Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces
- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver and no cash to find at the end of a long day. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Altitude, and why it matters to you
You will go from a transatlantic cabin to 2,400 metres in a single day, and the last part of that happens in a warm vehicle while you sleep. Drink more water than feels necessary on the drive, go easy on your first evening, and treat day one on the hill as a half day. None of that has anything to do with your fare, and it saves more holidays than anything else here.
Winter driving on this route
The Denver run crosses the Continental Divide on a high-altitude interstate, and heavy snow slows or closes it. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and drives the pass through the season, which is the difference between a delay and a cancelled evening. The Eagle County run is shorter, lower and far less exposed, which is a reason to prefer it beyond the price.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
