Landing at Geneva Airport (GVA)
Geneva is one of the main gateways to the Swiss Alps and it is the gateway for Nendaz: 170 km, about 2 hours by road, and £502 for a private car. It is also cheaper than Zurich on every vehicle hoppa prices on this route, which is unusual enough to be worth saying plainly.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person rather than a chatbot
Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket to your phone before you leave the terminal, and screenshot the e-ticket while you are at it.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Landing at Zurich instead
Two airports serve Nendaz and they are not interchangeable. Book the transfer for the one you are actually landing at:
- Geneva (GVA) — 170 km, about 2 hr, from £502. 8-seat minibus £662, 14-seater £995.
- Zurich (ZRH) — 280 km, about 3 hr 20 min, from £860. 8-seat minibus £1,153, 14-seater £1,850.
East along the Rhône, then up
From Geneva the route runs the length of the Rhône valley, motorway nearly all the way, past the vineyards and the valley towns to Sion, the capital of the Valais. That part is fast and unremarkable in any weather, which is exactly what you want after a flight.
The last part is different. Nendaz sits on a sunny terrace above the valley, so the road leaves the floor at Sion and climbs. It is the section that takes weather hard while the motorway below stays merely wet, and it is the reason the operators on this route are local and winter-equipped.
Worth knowing: this climb is also the whole difference between the public route and a transfer. The train reaches Sion and stops there. Everything above it is a local bus, taken last, with the skis.
Where you are dropped
Two villages share this mountainside and a driver needs to know which one:
- Nendaz — the larger of the two, with the ski schools, the rental shops and most of the beds
- Veysonnaz — a quieter hamlet with a small selection of shops and bars, and hotels at the foot of the slopes
Give the property name and its full address when you book and your driver goes to the door rather than to the village.
From Zurich
The approach is from the other side of the country and it is 280 km, about 3 hours 20. Same climb at the end, considerably more of it before.
Your first day on the hill
Nendaz is at the heart of the 4 Valleys, so your first decision is scale. The local Printz area is straight off the village and does the job on a short day or a flat-light morning; the wider circuit is there when you want to cover ground and keep going.
Sorting gear and lessons
- Ski schools — several to choose from in the village, along with independent instructors
- Rental — plenty of shops in Nendaz, so hiring on arrival is normal rather than a gamble
- Lift passes — decide whether you want the local area or the full 4 Valleys before you queue, because the answer changes the price
Tip: if you are staying in Veysonnaz, check which lift is nearest your hotel before your first morning. The two villages sit on the same mountainside but not on the same doorstep.
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Geneva has you in the village by early afternoon, which is enough time to collect gear and buy a pass. An evening flight means a night arrival and a full first day instead. Transfers run through the night on this route; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
If the weather turns
There is more here than lifts. Snowshoeing and sledging are the obvious ones, there are spa and wellness treatments for a day off the legs, and the village has restaurants and shops rather than a single lift-station cafe.
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time

- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver and no cash to find at the end of a long day. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Winter driving on this route
The valley motorway is ordinary winter driving and is cleared quickly. The climb onto the terrace is the part that changes with the weather, and it can be a question in heavy snow while the valley below is clear. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and knows the road. If you hire a car instead, check what is fitted before you leave the desk.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud.
