Landing at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG)
Belgrade is the gateway to Kopaonik and, for a hoppa transfer, the only one: 290 km, about four hours by road, and £369 for a private car. It is a single-terminal airport, so there is no terminal to change and no shuttle to catch between them. You walk from the gate into arrivals.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.
- Airport arrivals carry up to 60 minutes of free waiting, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay moves the pickup rather than losing it
- If you cannot see them, stay where you are and call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person rather than a chatbot
Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket before you leave the terminal. Four hours is a long way to be out of touch with the one booking that matters.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces, which a ski bag almost always does.
Why not a closer airport
Two Serbian airports sit closer to the resort than Belgrade does, and neither is bookable:
- Niš Constantine the Great — 125 km from the resort, about 2.5 hours. hoppa returns no vehicle from it.
- Kraljevo Morava — 105 km, about 2 hours, and the closest airport of the three. hoppa returns no vehicle from it either.
- Belgrade Nikola Tesla (BEG) — 290 km, about 4 hours, from £369. Furthest out, and the one that ends at your hotel door.
290 km, and the last half hour is the one that counts
From Belgrade the route runs south through central Serbia on good motorway for most of its length, past Kraljevo at 105 km from the resort and Raška at 35 km, before turning up onto the Kopaonik massif for the climb. Roughly four hours in clear conditions.
The motorway section is unremarkable and quick. The character of the drive is all in the last stretch, where the road narrows, climbs and gains snow.
Worth knowing: Belgrade is not the closest airport to Kopaonik, whatever you read elsewhere. Kraljevo is 105 km out and Niš 125 km, against Belgrade's 290. What makes Belgrade the right answer is not distance but inventory — it is the one airport hoppa can put a vehicle at.
Where you are dropped
Kopaonik is a purpose-built resort strung along a ridge rather than a village with one square in the middle, so the address does real work here:
- The ridge itself — most hotels and apartment blocks, within walking distance of the lifts
- Brzeće — the settlement on the lower slopes, reached by the gondola
- Raška — the town 35 km down the road, where some groups stay for the cheaper beds
Give the property name with the booking and your driver goes to the door rather than to the nearest lift station.
Winter on this road
The motorway is cleared and the mountain section is not always. Snow on the climb is normal from midwinter, daylight is short in January, and the last kilometres are the ones a tired driver gets wrong. Every vetted operator on this route runs winter-equipped vehicles and drives it through the season.
Your first day on the hill
Kopaonik skis as one broad, open area rather than a chain of linked valleys: more than 55 kilometres of groomed piste off a high ridge, with snow-making on the main runs, modern lifts and a snow park. Beginners get wide gentle terrain and a ski school; stronger skiers get black runs and off-piste beyond them. It is sunnier and considerably cheaper than the Alps, and the runs are shorter.
Getting to the lifts from your hotel
- On foot — most of the ridge hotels are a few minutes from a lift, which is the point of a purpose-built resort
- Gondola from Brzeće — if you are staying on the lower slopes rather than on top
- Your transfer — hoppa drops you at your accommodation, so moving around the mountain during the week is a separate arrangement
Tip: the resort is high and open, and 200-plus sunny days a year means glare rather than shelter. Goggles and sun cream do more work here than an extra layer.
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Belgrade has you on the ridge by late afternoon with the evening to sort gear. An evening flight means arriving in the dark after four hours of road, which is fine when the transfer is booked and unpleasant when it is not. Transfers run through the night; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already inside the price you agreed.
If the weather closes in
Spa treatments, snowshoeing and sledding are all on the doorstep, the evening scene is genuinely busy for a resort this size, and Studenica Monastery, a UNESCO site, is 65 km away. A day off the pistes here is a day out.
Practical essentials
Your transfer, in numbers
- Free waiting on airport arrivals: up to 60 minutes, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
- Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: up to 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
- Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above, all for a full refund
- Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking
- Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces
- Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
- Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
- Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance
Paying for it
Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver at the end of a four-hour drive. hoppa takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.
Money on the mountain
Serbia uses the dinar and is not in the eurozone, so a card is the simplest way to pay for lift passes, lessons and dinner. Your transfer is settled before you travel and is not affected either way.
If something goes wrong
hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. The hoppa help centre is the place to start if you would rather read the answer than ask for it. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.
Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point and the emergency number are the two things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud after a late landing.
